January 7 Trail Report
January 7, 2026 12:00 PM
While conditions were fairly good yesterday on sandy and loamier trails, we have again received quite a bit of overnight rain. This will point you toward the sandiest trails today, and with sub-freezing lows coming our way beginning tomorrow morning these trails may be the best bet for quite some time.
Morning temperatures below freezing tend to force water back up to the trail surface, and when daytime temps climb above freezing this leads to muddy conditions on trails that were previously dry. We saw this last week and anticipate seeing more of it for the foreseeable weather future according to forecasts.
Both our Interactive Map https://ridgetorivers.org/trails/interactive-map/ and Wet Weather and Muddy Trails page https://ridgetorivers.org/trail-guide/trail-etiquette/wet-weather-and-winter-trail-use/ will be helpful to you in planning routes that won't lead to damaging soft trails.
Please turn around if you encounter muddy trail conditions – don’t continue on your planned route. While the weather appears to be drying out over the next week, we are likely headed into the muddiest trail conditions we’ve seen all winter.
