February 8 Trail Report

28 Trail 4

If you have been tracking with these trail condition reports over the past few weeks you just may be tired of reading the message, “frozen early and then thawing by late morning.” Well, if that idea has run its course for you, then you’re in luck because it doesn’t appear that we even got close to freezing temps overnight! Ultimately, what this means is that you won’t have frozen trail conditions to rely on if you are one of the few that brave the colder morning temps to avoid soggy trails later in the day. Instead, on trails where conditions remain muddy, they will almost certainly be so first thing this morning as well. The flip side to that, however, is that yesterday’s sunshine and warmer temperatures overnight probably went a long way to progress drying conditions throughout the trail system.

Looking ahead a day, however, our forecast does indicate that we may be in for a significant weather change beginning tomorrow. We’re seeing a pretty good chance of precipitation tomorrow morning along with these warmer temperatures. Looking ahead even a bit further into next week, there also appears to be more precipitation (potentially even snow!) on the horizon. All told, this means you should definitely get out today to enjoy the trail conditions that are out there with the idea in mind that they may be set back once again by any significant amount of precipitation in the coming days.

We have made significant changes to Ridge to Rivers Interactive Trail Map this morning to highlight those progressively drying trail conditions. The map reads a bit more like a mixed bag of conditions today, with some green/dry trails and some red/muddy trails but mostly a lot of yellow/mix of dry with wet spots. Even with these changes to the map, good judgement still applies; if you are tracking through long sections of very muddy trail then it is still time to turn around and find a better alternative. The Wet and Winter Weather page provides lots of great options.

Thanks to everyone for being mindful of trail conditions when you are out enjoying the Boise Foothills!
