February 4 Trail Report

February 4, 2026 12:00 PM

Chukar Butte

What a tough week for the trails. Early spring like temperatures and sunshine are bringing folks out in droves – and unfortunately the trails are paying the price. They are as muddy as we’ve seen them this winter. The afternoon traffic is rutting trails significantly and contributing greatly to trail widening and the loss of our singletrack. Our trail program isn’t the only one seeing this, as we have received several complaints from responsible trail users expressing dismay at the lack of good judgement.

Please keep these thoughts in mind today:
1)    We have a mild freeze this morning – if you get out early you can go anywhere you want without damaging trails. By early we mean that you should be off most trails by 10 a.m., as they were already turning muddy by that time yesterday.
2)    If you go out later than 10 a.m., please stick to sandy or all-weather trails as indicated on our Interactive Map and detailed on our website’s Winter Trail Options page.
3)    TURN AROUND IF YOU ENCOUNTER MUDDY CONDITIONS

Thanks for checking today’s report.

One final note: To those who continue to post disparaging comments to these reports - refrain from doing so. The (very small) Ridge to Rivers staff is completely dedicated and wholly committed to providing a quality trail system for everyone, and for future generations as well as those of us who enjoy the trails presently.  These reports are issued daily in the hope of helping all of us as trail users to achieve that goal.
