Ridge to Rivers Partners Launch New Online Trail Map

November 13, 2018

Members of the Ridge to Rivers partnership are excited to announce a new beta interactive trail map that is now live on the Ridge to Rivers website.

The beta map allows users to geo-locate themselves on trails throughout the Ridge to Rivers system. It was developed by Ada County Information Technology using Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) equipment. Once complete, the map will display over 190 miles of high resolution imagery of the Boise Foothills.

Trail users of all kinds can use this online resource to view the Ridge to Rivers system, utilizing high resolution 3D imagery for their hike, run or ride. The new interactive map is also mobile-friendly and responsive, providing a modern platform for future trail map development.

Ridge to Rivers partners will gather feedback from users during this testing phase to improve usability – with plans to replace the current map on the Ridge to Rivers website in 2019.

Partners also believe this updated technology will help firefighters, police and paramedics better respond to incidents throughout the Boise Foothills range.

“The high resolution imagery allows users to view different trail features, including rocks, obstacles and ridges to assess level of difficulty better than ever before,” said David Gordon, Ridge to Rivers program manager. “The level of detail the map provides even includes the number of parking spaces located at each trailhead and tells users if there is a bathroom available.”

The Ridge to Rivers partnership was formed in 1992 and consists of the City of Boise, Ada County, the Bureau of Land Management Four Rivers Field Office, the Boise National Forest and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. The partnership exists under a Memorandum of Understanding, with the City of Boise serving as the lead agency.
