Accessible Trails

handbike2The Ridge to Rivers system does not presently contain trails that meet ADA Accessibility Guidelines.  However, there are a number of trails that are wide enough for wheelchair and handbike passage, have relatively flat grades, and contain base material that is relatively firm and obstacle free.  These are multiple use non-motorized trails, meaning that you could encounter mountain bikes and horses along these trails, as well as other hikers. 

Trails you might like to try include:

    • The Grove Trail #38 / Owls Roost Trail #37 as a loop.  NOTES:  Both trails are a minimum 48” wide, and have relatively flat grades with little in the way of physical obstacles.  Owls Roost contains one short section with an approximately 5% grade.
    • Gold Finch Trail #35  NOTES:  Trail is minimum 40” wide, relatively flat in grade with little in the way of physical obstacles.  Limited visibility for trail users traveling in the opposite direction.
    • Hulls Pond Loop #34  NOTES:  Trail is minimum 48” wide, relatively flat in grade with no obstacles.  It does contain one short sandier section that can be somewhat off-camber on the west side of the pond.
    • Red Winged Blackbird Trail #35A (to just beyond the second bridge) – pedestrian only  NOTES:  Trail is minimum 36” wide and relatively flat in grade to just beyond the second bridge.  There are no obstacles, however bridges are 36” wide.  Trail becomes much narrower and brushier beyond 2nd bridge.
    • Toll Road Trail #27A NOTES:  Old road bed.  Very wide, relatively flat, no obstacles.
    • Basalt Trail #101 NOTES:  Trail is minimum 36” wide, very flat, no obstacles.Rim Trail #102 (pedestrian only)  NOTES:  Trail is minimum 36” wide, very flat, no obstacles.
    • Oregon Trail #103  NOTES:  Trail is minimum 36” wide, very flat, no obstacles.
    • Eagle Ridge Trail #25  NOTES:  Trail can be accessed via The Ponds Loop #21.  Trail is paved up to radio towers, though climbs steeply for approximately 500’.  Trail becomes narrow and rocky beyond radio towers.
    • The Ponds Loop #21 NOTES:  Trail is minimum 72” wide, very flat, no obstacles.
    • Shoshone-Bannock Tribes Trail #19A:  NOTES:  Trail contains an all-weather surface of compacted road mix.  It is 48” wide and very flat, with excellent sight lines.  Lower portions of Shoshone-Paiute Tribes Trail #19 will also be all-weather surfaced in 2017, allowing for a short loop opportunity.
    • Harrison Hollow #57  NOTES:  Trail contains an all-weather surface of compacted road mix.  It is 48 – 60” wide, with excellent sight lines.  The trail is very flat for the first .8 miles.  The final .1 mile climbs very aggressively to a saddle.  Trails leading away from the saddle are too narrow for handbike or wheelchair access.

handbikeMany Ridge to Rivers trails follow old jeep routes – meaning that they are relatively wide, with flat and steeper sections inter-mixed.  These can make for enjoyable but challenging outings on a handbike.   It is important to note that handbikes are not allowed on trails that are too narrow to accommodate their width.  This is both a resource protection and a safety measure.

Some suggestions include:

  • Kestrel Trail #39A  NOTES:  Trail is minimum 36” wide, with uneven tread, but relatively few obstacles other than drain dips designed to mitigate erosion.  First half of trail is relatively flat, with blind corners.  Second half of trail climbs relatively steeply with good sight lines.  Trail receives heavy mountain bike use.
  • Crestline Trail #28  NOTES:  Trail is minimum 48” wide.  There is a steep 200 foot climb approximately 600 feet beyond the Kestrel Trail junction.  Beyond that the trail is flat with good sight lines.  Recommend turning around at the junction with 8th Street Motorcycle Trail #4.  Trail receives heavy mountain bike use.
  • Corrals Trail #31  NOTES:  First 1.5 miles of this trail are relatively flat and very wide, with long sightlines.  Beyond this point, the trail becomes increasingly rocky, narrower and steeper.  IMPORTANT NOTE:  Trail is accessed via a 12” high step-over bar that requires assistance.  Ridge to Rivers will replace this step-over bar with a latch gate spring, 2017.
  • Hard Guy Trail #33 NOTES:  The first 3.8 miles of this trail follow an old jeep route.  The route is wide enough for hand bikes, though quite steep in places and is a very consistent climb.  The final 1 mile of this trail becomes progressively narrower and rockier, prohibiting handbike use.  Sight lines are excell
    ent on this trail.
  • Table Rock Trail #15  NOTES:  This trail is very wide, with long sight lines.  It is also a very aggressive climb.  All other trails in the Table Rock area are too narrow for handbikes.
  • Homestead Trail #12 NOTES:  This trail ascends aggressively along an old road route.  As such it is challenging, yet very wide with long sight lines.  IMPORTANT NOTE:  Trail is accessed via a 12” high step-over bar that requires assistance.  Ridge to Rivers will replace this step-over bar with a latch gate spring, 2017.
  • Red Fox Trail #36  NOTES:  Trail has a mix of tread conditions ranging from soft sand closer to the Camelsback area, to road mix at the northern end.  Width also ranges from full road size down to 48”.  Sight lines are fairly good, though the trail is heavily used by mountain bikers.  Trail is relatively flat, with one short, notable climb in the Hulls Pond area.
  • accessability2Ski area cat tracks and Nordic trails at Bogus Basin  NOTES:  Most cat tracks, and many Nordic trails double as hiking and biking routes during summer months.  These routes are wide, though often steep and contain limited visibility.  It is not uncommon to encounter Bogus Basin service vehicles along the following cat tracks/trails:  Sunshine, Pioneer, Bogus Creek, Packing, Lodge, Cabin Traverse.
